Kalvin Phillips fit for new challenges with City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes no exits are forthcoming, reiterating his desire to retain Bernardo Silva at City. It appears that just days before the Summer Transfer Window shuts, City midfielder Bernardo Silva will stay with the Premier League club. Pep Guardiola said he expects Sergio Gomez to be the last Manchester City signing in the transfer window last week. Spanish defender Sergio Gomez will fight to win his spot in the first team, Pep Guardiola told his press conference on Friday, having impressed Belgian club Anderlecht last season under the guidance of ex-Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany. However, Anderlecht’s Sergio Gomez is seen as a developmental signing who may end up on loan, with City still on the market for a top-class left-back ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.

There have been suggestions Sergio Gomez could be loaned to Girona. Still, given Manchester City’s lack of depth at the full-back position, Gomez should be expected to remain, barring any further signings. Gomez played an advanced role for Anderlecht last season and was capable of driving into the box, creating several excellent chances. Hence, it seems like the perfect candidate to slide into Pep Guardiola’s system if required. Sergio Gomez has shown plenty of versatility this way, having established himself as a leading chances creator for Anderlecht and in the Belgian Pro League last season. Like the next Alphonso Davies, Gomez now has a case for being at his most exciting when used as a full-back who overlaps. Still, his midfield work means that he can also perform exceptionally well in more of a reserved role requiring ball progress, including in reversal positions in midfield.

While speaking to the press before the game against Newcastle United, Pep Guardiola stated that the new signing Phillips and the young graduate Palmer are fully fit to be involved in the match. Pep would like to make it three out of three wins as they witnessed their title challengers Liverpool draw both of their matches, and also their close rivals Manchester United sitting at the bottom of the table after two defeats. Manchester City made an excellent start to their title defence with two wins, and also their new striker scored on his PL debut and also assisted a goal in the second game. It feels like Haaland is settling down nicely with Manchester City, and I think everyone knew this would happen as City lacked a proper striker, and they got one of the best young strikers. Visiting Newcastle this weekend, we expect more goals from City just like last weekend.
