Newcastle United are interested in signing the Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina this summer.
According to Daily Mail, the Magpies have opened talks regarding a £4 million move for the player and they are hoping to finalise an agreement this week.
Apparently, the Premier League side wanted to sign the 27-year-old last month as well but they wanted to offer players in a swap deal which was unacceptable for the Saints.
Southampton prefer a cash deal for the midfielder.
Initially, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley did not want to pay a fee for the 27-year-old midfielder but the club staff have now managed to convince him that it is a deal worth doing.
The Southampton midfielder was on loan at Fulham last season and he was quite impressive for the Cottagers despite their relegation to the Championship.
It is no secret that Newcastle will have to add more depth and quality in the middle of the park and Lemina should prove to be a quality addition.
He could operate alongside Isaac Hayden in a pivot next season. Lemina will add power, presence and drive to Steve Bruce’s side. He can carry the ball forward as well.
The player has the ability to justify the reported £4 million price tag. Also, he is well settled in the Premier League and he could make an immediate impact after joining Newcastle.
Newcastle will have to invest in their midfield this summer and they must look to bring in upgrades for the likes of Jeff Hendrick and Jonjo Shelvey.
The Magpies should look to re-sign Joe Willock from Arsenal as well to add some goals to their midfield next season.
