The Russia 2018 world cup is at it day four. Although there has not been any serious controversial incident so far, in this article, we have taken a look at some of the most controversial moments in the history of the Mundial.
1. The Hand Of God, 1986
If you must create a FIFA world cup controversial moment list, Diego Maradona’s hand of god goal incident must be top of that list of the list can’t be said to be valid. The incident happened in the Mexico 1986 FIFA world cup. It was the quarter final match between England and Argentina. The first half ended in a barren draw. But after just six minutes, Maradona scored what is now known as the hand of god goal. England goalkeeper Peter Shilton had contested against Maradona for an aerial ball but the faster Maradona reached the ball first and scored. It was initially thought to be a headed goal but replays shows that Maradona had in fact used his hand to score the goal. The referee was fooled and the goal stood. Maradona would then score another goal four minutes later that ended up taking all the attention away from the hand ball incident. That second goal is regarded as the best EVER individual goal of the FIFA world cup.
2. Luis Suarez handball – South Africa 2010
Uruguay will be heavily dependent on Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez for his year’s world cup. However, Suarez’s moment of craze could actually ruin Uruguay. In 2010, Suarez was red carded in the match against Ghana at the quarter final stage. Although I doubt his team mates and country would complain much about that incident as it only saved a goal that would have sent them out of the tournament at the quarter final stage, that incident however remains one of the most controversial in the history of the Mundial.
3. Luis Suarez Bitegate, Brazil 2014
Four years after the incident in 2010, Suarez wasn’t stopping a goal bound ball with his hand but this time he was doing something worst. It was the final group match of the between Uruguay and Italy. The Italians needed just a draw to go through to the second round while Uruguay must beat Italy. Suarez was carrying most of Uruguay’s goal hopes. In the 79th minute with the match Suarez and Giorgio Chiellini clashed in the Italy goal area and replays showed that Uruguay had bitten the Juventus star. Although the Referee didn’t see the incident and awarded the South Americans corner kick despite the appeal from the Italians. Uruguay ended up scoring from the corner. Suarez was however banned for 9 international matches which ended his participation in the 2014 FIFA world cup.
4. Rivaldo Dive – Korea/Japan 2002
Rivaldo, remember him? He in my opinion the second best Brazilian player in the 2002 FIFA world cup. In Brazil’s first match against Turkey at the 2002 world cup, Rivaldo who was then on the books of Barcelona was waiting for the ball by the corner flag. A Turkish player, Hakan Unsal, kicked the ball to Rivaldo for the corner kick, the ball ended up hitting Rivaldo by his thigh. But in a bid to get the player sent off, Rivaldo clutched onto to his face as though the ball had hit his face. Rivaldo succeeded as Hakan Unsal was shown a second yellow and was sent off. Rivaldo ended up being the first player fined by FIFA for diving in the history of the FIFA world cup. He was fined 11,670 Swiss Francs.
