Week 16 Premier League Predictions

What a weekend of football we had in week 15. To prepare for next weekend the week 16 Premier League predictions I look ahead at another set of fantastic fixtures. Of course, the biggest match of the weekend is the Manchester Derby set up between the top two places in the current Premier League table. There is much on the line for this match considering the recent form of both clubs as well as the title implications that are at stake, even this early in the season. In addition to doing my weekly predictions this is a great chance to take a look at fantasy Premier League options and matchups for gameweek 16.

Week 16 Premier League predictions also includes the Liverpool derby. Everton’s change in managers has seen their fortunes change for the better, but it’s hard to see them getting much of anything from this match. Liverpool’s fantastic attacking form has them as massive favorites in this one. The one thing going for Everton in this one is that it is a derby match and anything can happen.

Chelsea kicks off the weekend facing West Ham in what should be a pretty straightforward win for the Blues. Watford’s travels to Burnley could be interesting considering how close they currently sit in the table. Watford’s attacking threat should be an interesting counter against Burnley’s resolute defense. Burnley’s defensive record has taken a blow in the last 3 weeks having given up a goal in each match and losing 2/3. Still, I would continue to stick with Burnley defenders in fantasy Premier League regardless of the format.

The Manchester Derby is one that is certainly on everyone’s minds for this week. City’s form this season has been untouchable and they have been scoring goals with near impunity. Even the most recent matches that they looked like dropping points have resulted in last minute winners. They don’t look like losing any time soon and seem destined for the title. Anything short of winning the Premier League this season is going to be a disastrous failure for them.

On the Red side of Manchester, United will be missing Paul Pogba after the referee decided to give him a red card in their 1-3 win over Arsenal last Saturday. This will be a major blow considering how important he has been to this United side; particularly in attack.

There are a lot of battling narratives in this match. United have won their last 8 home matches while city have won their last 13 matches. United has given up just 1 goal in their last 8 home matches while City has scored at least 2 goals in their last 8 matches.

I’m expecting Manchester United to sit back and defend resolutely while trying to grab a goal on the break or from a set piece. Other teams, most notably Huddersfield, have found some success with this format and Mourinho has never had a problem playing the spoiler. It will be a question of whether he will do this in a home match.

I would expect that United will play a 5-4-1 with 2 defensive midfielders, 2 wide midfielders, and Lukaku all alone up front. On the blue side I doubt Guardiola will tinker much with this squad that has been playing well all season. I’m expecting both Sane and Sterling starting. The biggest question mark will be who he starts up front. I am predicting that it will be Jesus starting and Aguero coming on to join him late in the game (depending on the score).

In terms of FPL matchups for the week, there are few teams that look like great stacks apart from Chelsea. Liverpool’s attack is always a viable fantasy option, even in the Merseyside derby. There are a few matches that look destined for 0-0 draws and could be great options for defensive picks. Fantasy Premier League managers might want to look at Burnley or West Brom for possible clean sheets.
