Leon Goretzka is a player Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and lately Manchester City have been strongly linked with signing in the last couple of weeks. The highly-rated and versatile German has just about eight months left on his contract with his current club Schalke 04 and this has led to transfer speculations.
During the last international break, former Germany international Oliver Bierhoff hinted the player could be on his way to the Premier League which led to much speculation, with different people trying to predict his next destination.
Yesterday news broke that Barca have agreed a deal to sign the player next summer. The report which was monitored by Jacob Murtagh of the Daily Mirror was initially reported by SportBild. But how true could this be? The same Barca which SportBILD claim would be signing Leon Goretzka are said to have an agreement in place with Antoine Griezmann to join next summer. The same Barca are said to have agreed a cut price €20m deal to sign Mesut Ozil from Arsenal.
Surely the Catalans don’t need to sign that many midfielders? All three of the players Barca are said to have signed can play in the same position, which means Barca certainly can’t be signing all of them and further puts to question the credibility of all of the reports.
If you ask me, I think I will go with Oliver Bierhoff in believing the player is off to the Premier League, but only time will tell which of the clubs that are interested in him will sign him. Barca seems more interested in signing Philippe Coutinho and should they fail, they will likely sign Griezmann and certainly not Ozil nor Goretzka – that’s my opinion.
If I were to make a guess about where the German will be playing his football next season, I would say it is between Arsenal and Liverpool. I don’t think the reported interest from Manchester City and Tottenham is strong enough.
