Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario could be on his way to Arsenal this summer as a replacement for Mesut Ozil after his club decided he can be sold for just £26 million. The former Sporting Lisbon star was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2016 but ended up at Inter after the Italian team agreed to pay €40 million plus €5 million in bonuses.
Unfortunately he hasn’t done well at Inter Milan since joining them and recently had a fall out with manager Luciano Spalletti. If the report by Team Talk is correct, it could mean there is no way back for the Portuguese international with Inter Milan, and hence they have decided to sell him. Joao Mario is certainly a quality player and has 31 caps for Portugual. He could rediscover his form under a manager like Arsene Wenger, and with Mesut Ozil likely to leave, the 24-year-old has been linked with Arsenal.
Wenger likes versatile players and considering Joao Mario can play as a central attacking midfielder as well as on the right side of attack, it wouldn’t surprise us if a deal happens. However, if I am to choose between Nabil Fekir, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal, and Joao Mario, I would certainly pick the Frenchman Fekir ahead of the Portuguese.
The only problem is Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyon President, who is very unlikely to sell Fekir. Arsenal will already know how difficult he can be from their negotiations for the signing of Alexandre Lacazette this past summer.
Reports already claim Arsenal are readying a £60 million bid for Fekir but if the report that Mario is now available for a cut price is true, Wenger may be tempted to go for the Portuguese even though the Frenchman would suit Arsenal better.
