Leon Goretzka has been strongly linked with moves to Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur over the past few weeks. The rumours became even more intense when Germany national team manager Olivier Bierhoff hinted at the player moving to the Premier League.
We speculated here that Arsenal had the best chance of signing the midfielder before we discussed how the influence that Jurgen Klopp has on German players could help Liverpool beat the rest of the chasing pack to the signing of Goretzka. Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City have also been linked with the signing of the player. But today, reports now claim that Barcelona may have beaten everyone to the signing of the player.
If true the Catalans will be getting a solid and versatile midfielder for a cut price as his contract expires at the end of the season. A deal could be done in either January, or on a free transfer in the summer. Leon Goretzka can play as a central attacking midfielder; the Mesut Ozil role at Arsenal, and also as a box-to-box/deep lying midfielder.
If he joins Barca, Goretzka would most likely be replacing Ivan Rakitic in their starting eleven. His style of play would be well-suited to the Spanish giants. He is very attack-minded player. In fact, Whoscored reckon Goretzka has the tendency to forget his defensive duties, and as we all know, Barcelona really don’t put much effort into defending. Their philosophy is to defend by attacking.
