This past summer when Arsenal were trying to sign Thomas Lemar from AS Monaco, I told a few of my friends who are gooners they should make a move for RB Leipzig star Emil Forsberg instead. The Swedish international recorded the most assists in the German Bundesliga last season. In all he scored 8 goals and created 19 assists in the league alone last season. Forsberg, Naby Keita and Timo Werner were mainly responsible for RB Leipzig finishing second in the Bundesliga last term.
At the time Arsenal were linked with his signing but I strongly believe that if they had focused half as much attention on signing him as they did with Thomas Lemar, they probably would have got their target. Whilst he is certainly not better than Alexis Sanchez he would certainly be an upgrade on Theo Walcott.
Arsene Wenger and Arsenal’s loss could well be Manchester United’s gain as reports have it the Red Devils are interested in signing Emil Forsberg. Reports suggest Jose Mourinho is not a fan of Anthony Martial’s work rate and I believe the thinking here is that Forsberg would be a big upgrade on the former AS Monaco attacker, who has been also linked with a move to Arsenal.
According to the Mirror, Mourinho was in attendance at the Sweden versus Italy World Cup qualifier on Friday and the report speculates that the United boss was personally scouting Emil Forsberg, which if true, means Manchester United are probably very keen on signing him.
Where will he play if he signs for United?
Emil Forsberg is a very versatile player. He can play in the number 10 role, can play as a box-to-box midfielder, as well as on the left and right flanks. His signing could however be the end of not just Anthony Martial, but as well as that of United’s reported move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil. And rightly so. Ozil in my opinion is a good midfielder but not one meant for the very physical Premier League.
It would make sense if United are getting Ozil on a free transfer but not for the reported £30 million that Arsenal are looking for this January. I think Manchester United will be better served spending the same or just a little more to sign Emil Forsberg from RB Leipzig.
The player was also seriously linked with a move to Liverpool last summer but it remains unclear if Jurgen Klopp’s side will make a move again for him this January, or in the summer transfer window.
