Wayne Rooney Offered to Napoli after Rocky Relationship with Mourinho

Vincenzo Morabito, top Italian football agent, has claimed that Manchester United have offered Wayne Rooney a Napoli  transfer as they try desperately to offload the player. This season, the England international has not been as much of a regular for the Red Devils as he once was, and reportedly, the relationship between Rooney and Mourinho has broken down that much that the manager is apparently willing to allow the 31-year-old to leave the club on loan. Speaking to Radio CRC, Morabito claimed that he ‘knew for a fact’ that Rooney had been offered to Napoli as he cannot go to other English clubs, something that could lead him to play in Italy or Spain.

End of an Era

However, although the idea of moving and playing as a top athlete in Naples may be a beautiful one from the outside, it may not seem all that good in reality when you take a look at the footballer’s £8.3m per year salary. At the moment, it’s clear that he certainly doesn’t have a very good relationship with Mourinho, and because of this, his future is looking increasingly like it should be as far away from United as possible in order to give him some room. Rooney has been one of the Red Devils’ longest standing players, having joined the team at Old Trafford in 2004 when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm. Today, he is only two goals away from surpassing the all-time goal scoring record away from Bobby Charlton. Don’t forget to check out Bookmaker Ratings if you want to bet on him achieving this.

Stained Relationship

However, in recent years it’s clear to see that the captain’s relationship with the club has soured, especially with the recent news that he plans to take his son to train to play football at arch-rivals Manchester City, who are currently two places above United in the Premier League standings. Earlier in December, it was reported that Rooney had accompanied his son Kai to the City Football Academy, rather than the club which made him a legend.

However, former Tottenham player Jamie Redknapp, whose son Beau plays for the Chelsea under-8’s, watched his son take on City’s youngsters and was only impressed by the high standard of the opposition. Along with the fact that City have high aspirations for their players at young ages, Redknapp says that he agrees with Rooney’s decision, as he believes playing at City will help Kai to flourish away from Manchester United. He spoke about his own experience as the son of a West Ham footballer, remembering how he used to be known as ‘Harry’s son’ rather than a player in his own standing.

Changes in January

Meanwhile, Mourinho is hoping to strengthen his defence ahead of January’s transfer window as Eric Bailly is set to depart shortly for the Africa Cup of Nations. United have so far targeted Victor Lindelof, the Benfica defender, however, the club may be set to face some strong opposition for his signature from Olympique Marseille. According to Le10Sport, the Ligue 1 side are also keeping a close eye on Lindelof’s performance against Napoli in the Champions League, and have expressed a lot of interest in signing him in January. Along with this, Inter Milan and Paris St Germain have also been reported to be interested in signing the defender once the transfer window opens in January.

Tensions are growing high at Manchester United, with household name Wayne Rooney ready to call his twelve year stint at the club to an end due to a strained relationship with Mourinho. Do you think that a fresh start is needed for Rooney? Have your say in the comments below.
