Week 3 Premier League Predictions

Week 3 arrives to give us another weekend of action just prior to the disappointment of the September international break. It is always such a let down to have these breaks during the season, especially since it isn’t necessarily a break for everyone. Not to mention how frequently it disrupts teams in terms of the break in action as well as fatigue and injuries. Enough ranting about the pointlessness of internationals, especially when there is a week of Premier League soccer to be played.

In week 2 the Manchester clubs both asserted their dominance and maintain perfect records to put them at the top of the table with +4 goal difference for both clubs. Hull and Chelsea also managed to pick up wins to keep them at six points. At this point of the season, this means very little in the long run, however, getting a strong start to the season is always important and can lead to a run of wins.

While Hull do have two wins to start their season, they are coming up against high flying Manchester United in week 3. With new world record signing Paul Pogba getting his debut in week 2, United will certainly look to get goals in this match to build on their start to the season. They are a much different looking team and won’t always play “beautiful” soccer, but they will certainly look to get the job done. Unlike last season, they have not been playing possession soccer and look content to let their opponents have the ball while working on remaining defensively solid.

One team that has looked far from defensively solid is Liverpool. They blitzed their way to a week 1 win over Arsenal, but still allowed 3 goals. This was followed up by allowing 2 goals to newly promoted Burnley. With both Andre Gray and Sam Vokes getting on the score sheet they are another team that will certainly be looking to build on their result. However, they will struggle against a Chelsea team that are also being carried by their forwards. Going back to Liverpool, their upcoming match against Tottenham will be a tough challenge. Tottenham haven’t looked like they are at their best yet and are certainly missing Mousa Dembele, but have still managed to find results in their first two matches. Tottenham are already a strong defensive team and Liverpool will struggle to break them down, despite having so much attacking talent and a (finally) healthy Daniel Sturridge.

The last match of the weekend features Man City, flying high after their 4-1 win over Stoke, and West Ham. West Ham managed to barely get past Bournemouth in a match that they were lucky to pick up all three points, mostly due to the Cherries being reduced to ten men. The one thing they do have going for them is the fact that Man City has not kept a clean sheet yet, albeit in just two matches.
