In the fantasy Premier League official game everyone gets one free transfer per week and there is always the difficulty of figuring out which player to bring in. With the salary cap rules in place this becomes even more difficult. The very best FPL managers usually have a strategy mapped out for several matches in advance. Their goal in doing this is to prepare for upcoming fixtures and then decide which players they want to bring in at specific points of the season.
Of course, this can change depending upon injuries or suspensions. Fortunately for myself I decided not to pick up Leighton Baines and left Kieran Trippier on the bench. I did, however, keep Cech in my lineup and he let me down badly.
Now that we are one week into the FPL season we can finally see which players are going to do well for the first week of the season. The whole problem with it being just one week in is that there are no trends to follow. Just because a player like Eden Hazard or Sergio Aguero scored just two points doesn’t mean that they are absolute flops and should be dropped. Likewise for players like Marc Albrighton or Riyad Mahrez and their 15 points.
In looking at some of the upcoming fixtures here are a few players to think about picking up.
£4.5 – £5.9:
Joe Gomez £4.6: the young full back played well in his debut for Liverpool and with the Reds facing Bournemouth, he should pick up more points this weekend.
Matteo Darmian £5.6: Darmian is another young fullback that did well in his debut. The Manchester United defender may not have picked up a ton of points, but he looked good and should be United’s starting right back.
Odion Ighalo £5.0: Watford won’t always be scoring two goals per game, but when they do, Ighalo will likely be involved in some way. A forward at just £5.0 is hard to come by and adding him to your team can be a great way to free up room for Sergio Aguero.
£6.0 – £8.0:
Andre Ayew £7.0: With Swansea City facing Newcastle United at home, they have another chance to score goals. Ayew was lively and looks like a quality pickup after their 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
Yohan Cabaye £6.5: I really like Cabaye. I had him starting in many of my FPL teams and I think he’s going to play a major role in Crystal Palace’s season.
Dimitri Payet £7.5: If you don’t have him already, then this is a player you need to seriously consider making room for. He is going to do well this season and be a catalyst for West Ham’s offense.
Right now it’s looking like Reece Oxford is the best pick for a £4.0 defender. He should get playing time this year for West Ham and it’s probably best to pick him up early before his price rises. Then again, he’s not going to get you a whole lot of points and would only be a bench filler.
After the first week of the season I’m not planning to make many changes, if any. I like my team even if there are some players I would like to add. At this point I’d rather save my transfer for a time when I really need it. Will you be making any changes in your team? Get involved and leave your comments below or via twitter. Be sure to check out Premier Injuries so you don’t make the mistake of starting anyone out injured (like I did with Baines last week, DOH).
As always I wish you good luck and have fun!
