Fantasy Premier League Friday: Buy or Sell Wilfried Bony in FPL?

Fantasy Premier League TipsThe transfer of Wilfried Bony from Swansea to Manchester City provides fantasy Premier League players with several questions. Should FPL managers buy or sell? Where will he fit into the Man City lineup? Will he play? Who will become his Swans replacement?

Bony is a center forward who seems to have it all. Quick, strong, great feet, and ability in front of goal, however, he will be joining a Man City strike force that already features Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, and Stevan Jovetic. That being said, Bony is a player that has proved his worth in terms of fitness considering how frequently Aguero is comparatively injured.

Much has been made of his goal scoring record over the past year, however, all of that changes now that he is with Manchester City. Not only is there the question of whether he will play for City, but also the question of where he will fit in to the system.

With Swansea City the style of play was built around having one striker capable of doing everything. Wilfried Bony certainly fit that description and he did very well for the Welsh club.

In Manchester City there’s a good chance that he will no longer be the primary striker. In fact, he may be played in tandem with Aguero. If this is the case, there is the larger question for fantasy Premier League managers of how this will affect both players.

Of course, there is the chance that it will increase the value of both players, but I’m of the opinion that it is more likely to decrease the effectiveness and value of both players.

Sergio Aguero’s season could have been much better if not for missing nearly six matches due to injury. In fact, this seems to be the biggest reason for City’s purchase of Bony.

So far Aguero has amassed 14 goals in the 17 matches which he has played in. This is including two matches that he spent under ten minutes on the pitch. In that time he also added three assists and 414 bonus points.

Bony has been quite good this season, but not quite at the same level as Aguero. Bony has been in the second tier of striker’s available for FPL managers. He has scored nine goals with two assists and gathered 301 bonus points.

In comparing these two Aguero has certainly been the more successful striker, but has also been in a much better, more successful team.

In a side by side comparison here are some of the key attacking statistics in a per game analysis:

Sergio Aguero Wilfried Bony
Goals Scored 0.82 0.45
Shots 4.65 3.30
Shot Accuracy % 58% 54%
Chances Created 0.94 0.95
Key Passes 0.76 0.85
Assists 0.18 0.10

In reality the stats show these two players being very close to one another. Aguero has taken more shots, and been more accurate, which has a very close correlation to scoring goals.

I would imagine that if Bony is able to get into the team, he will score goals, however, he will need to get starts and he is a player who may need to be played up front alone to really shine.

For now Wilfried Bony is still playing the African Cup of Nations so fantasy Premier League managers don’t need to worry too much about him, but when he returns there will be plenty of questions about where he fits in.

For now, he is a must own player. He’s at the top of those second tier strikers while being on the verge of breaking into the elite class. At £8.2M he’s well worth picking up, at least until we see where he fits into the Manchester City squad.

Stay tuned for the second part of this analysis of Wilfried Bony in which I will look at his Swansea City replacement, Bafetimbi Gomis.
