Gameweek 18 Fantasy Premier League Tips and Picks for Boxing Day

Fantasy Premier League TipsGameweek 18 in Fantasy Premier League takes place on Boxing Day. For my tips and picks this weekend I will be analyzing the trending midfielders for Manchester City. Currently Man City are second in the Premier League table, but on top of the form table with 6 wins in a row and being undefeated in their last 8 matches.

The problem with Man City is that they have such a deep bench. This means that there is a lot of competition for places in the side and especially in midfield. Fortunately for FPL owners they have all three of their main strikers out injured meaning that more of their midfielders are getting a chance to play.

In the coming weeks they have a fairly easy schedule starting with their Boxing Day fixture away to West Bromwich Albion, they then play Burnley and Sunderland at home, followed by away to Everton. After this it starts to get more difficult with matches against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Still, this holiday season sees them facing some favorable opponents which could be very beneficial for your fantasy Premier League team. At the same time, there are some risks in there if Pellegrini decides to rest some players.

Let’s take a look at some of the statistics.

At the moment Yaya Toure is City’s highest scoring midfielder with 74 FPL points having missed just one match and being a sub for one other. However, he also costs £10.8M. Behind Toure is David Silva with a total of 59 points. It must be noted that he missed 6 matches due to injury and doesn’t always complete matches and he costs £8.9M.

Next there is Samir Nasri and James Milner. Nasri still costs £8.2M while Milner is a massive bargain at £5.4M. So far this season Milner has missed two matches, but is often played as a sub. Similarly Nasri is often subbed off and has missed 5 matches this year.

The three midfielders I especially want to look at are David Silva, Samir Nasri, and James Milner. The key statistics I will analyze include successful passes, chances created, assists, goals, tackles won, and interceptions.

David Silva Samir Nasri James Milner
Successful Passes 641 628 453
Chances Created 25 31 34
Assists 2 3 5
Goals 4 0 0
Tackles Won 13 12 28
Interceptions 8 3 11

While not all of these stats necessarily account for FPL points they are a good marker for each player is being used and how you can expect them to get you points.

All three of these midfielders are played in very different roles. Nasri is often played further forward and typically out near the wing while Silva is usually allowed to roam the midfield almost at will. Milner, on the other hand, is often played wide, but expected to be more of a typical wide midfielder by playing in both attacking and defensive areas.

These roles can be seen in their statistics. Because Milner is expected to do more defensively he has more defensive statistics. Nasri plays up the pitch more and has fewer defensive stats. Likewise both Nasri and Silva are players who move about in the center of the field a bit more meaning they are passing it around more often.

At the same time, Milner has more assists due to his ability to get forward and wide and cross it into the box for players like Silva to run onto.

At the moment David Silva has been in good form. Having just returned from injury he has only played in Man City’s last two matches. Even after playing just 68 minutes last week he managed to rack up 16 fantasy Premier League points after netting 2 goals.

He would be a solid pick up for any FPL team, but so would either Nasri or Milner. The problem with either of these two Is that they don’t always get consistent playing time. Milner has been used the most out of these three, but he doesn’t always play in full matches.

While I would love to tell you definitively which of these three you should take, the stats don’t give a definite answer. If I had to pick between the three, I would take Silva. When he is fit, he runs the offense for City and will continue to play when their strikers return. However, he is still returning to fitness and there is a good chance he will be rested at some point in the near future.

The same could be said for Nasri and Milner as well. My second pick would be Milner simply because he is such a work horse for the team. He will get playing time, but realize that his value comes in the price tag.

For you FPL team this weekend and in the coming weeks it would be a good idea to look at which Man City players to pick. They have a good run of matches and lead the form table. They have also picked up 3 clean sheets in a row meaning defenders would be viable options as well.
