AC Milan v Atletico Madrid Champions League Preview Wednesday First Leg

UEFA Champions League Predictions

AC Milan play host to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League match this Wednesday. In my preview for this match-up I have included my prediction along with betting odds.

AC Milan

The introduction of Clarence Seedorf as manager was certainly an interesting one. The way that AC Milan has been playing this season they will be looking at this match as a must win. They are currently well off the top three in the Serie A with 32 points in 10th place (7 away from Inter in the fifth place Europa League place).

In the Champions League they managed to barely scrape through with a 2-3-1 record which also included three clean sheets. They did score at least one goal in all but one match while scoring 8 and allowing 5.

Milan has some injuries to several key players including Stephan El Shaaraway, Kaka, and Robinho as well as having Sulley Muntari and Riccardo Montolivo suspended for the first leg.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid has certainly been a surprise this season. They are currently sitting at the top of La Liga with 60 points and an excellent goal difference thanks to their defense, having allowed the fewest goals in the league with just 16.

In the Champions League they made it to the round of 16 as group winners and went unbeaten with just the one draw away to Zenit St. Petersburg. Atletico also was able to score in every match of the group stage and scored at least two goals in all but the 1-1 draw.

They scored 15 goals while allowing just 3. Offensively they scored 6 from open play, 6 from set pieces and 3 from counter attacks. They do a good job of varying their attacks and, in the Champions League, have scored 48% of their goals from within the 18 yard box and a further 43% from outside of the box.

Atletico Madrid’s injury concerns include Jose Vargas, Filipe, Tiago, and Javier Gaitan.

My pick is for an Atletico Madrid win. While I have predicted to be 0-1 to the visitors, it could certainly have more goals in it than that. Both teams have a goals conceded average of under 1.
