Cardiff City v Wigan Athletic Fifth Round FA Cup Preview and Prediction

2014 FA Cup Predictions

Cardiff City host FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic in what should be a good match in the Fifth Round. Wigan may be in the Championship and facing Premier League opposition, but this will not mean much to them and will have no fear about travelling to Wales on Saturday.

Cardiff City

So far the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has not turned out to be the catalyst to much improved form. Their midweek 0-0 draw was enough to keep them from the bottom of the Premier League, but they remain in the relegation zone with 22 points in 19th place. The 0-0 draw is just another sign of their struggles this season in being unable to score goals. In their last six matches in all competitions they have failed to score in three matches, including their last two Premier League games.

They have advanced to the fifth round following a third round 2-1 away win over Newcastle United then a 1-0 away win over Bolton. A win in the FA Cup could be the catalyst they need to get themselves out of the bottom of the Premier League, while a loss could really damage their morale.

Wigan Athletic

Once again Wigan are in an excellent FA Cup run and in a position of power in that they really have nothing to lose. While they aren’t completely out of the race for promotion, they are currently in 9th place with 43 points, putting them seven points out of the last playoff spot. Their recent form has been spotty, but the FA Cup is the perfect place for them to look to get a result and gain some confidence.

My pick is a draw. Neither team is playing very well lately, though I would give Cardiff a slight edge as the home team. In their last six meetings, dating from 2002-2005, Wigan holds the advantage with three wins and three draws.
