The week 4 Premier League Predictions have been posted, so go read up on my EPL picks for the weekend. Be sure to also check out the Premier League TV Schedule and 2013-14 Premier League Table.

Liverpool have started out this season in flying form by winning three straight before finally drawing away 2-2 to Swansea. In their last 12 matches in the EPL they are undefeated and they have kept a clean sheet in their last four home games. They are also coming up against a Southampton team that has sputtered a bit to start the season and have only one win in their last ten matches.

To start this season Liverpool have allowed only two goals and both of those came in the draw against Swansea this past Monday. Southampton hasn’t done much worse, also allowing only two goals coming in their 1-0 loss to Norwich and their 1-1 draw to Sunderland.

Statistically speaking the two teams are fairly evenly matched if looking at home/away stats. Liverpool have scored two goals at home with an average of 18 shots per game for a 5% conversion rate. Southampton also have a 5% conversion rate with one away goal in 9.5 shots per game. Liverpool’s possession at home is an average of 48% compared to Southampton on the road with 56%. Additionally Liverpool have spent 31% of their home matches in the attacking third with Southampton spending 34% of their matches in the defending third.

In looking over statistics Liverpool appear to struggle with converting their chances despite spending a lot of time building up play and creating chances. Southampton have done well in defending this year, but have not been clinical in their finishing.

My prediction is for a Liverpool win. If Southampton have any hope of getting result they will need to be resolute in the first half and frustrate Liverpool. So far this season Liverpool have seemed to run out of steam as the game progresses, preferring to score early then sit back and hold on to the lead. This didn’t work out so well against Swansea who’s constant passing and moving eventually wore down the Liverpool defense. This should be the blueprint for Southampton if they want to find success.

Betting Odds: Liverpool win: 1.45-1.54; Draw: 4.26-4.50; Southampton: 7.28-8.00

Form: Liverpool (W, W, W, D)     Southampton (W, D, L, D)

Prediction: Liverpool 2 – 0 Southampton
