Manchester City staked their title claim in the first Monday match of the season with a 4-0 win over Newcastle United. It was a dominant display and they were able to capitalize further once Newcastle was down to 10 men.

Cardiff City are probably the one team out of the three promoted sides that will stay up this season despite having lost their first match 2-0 to West Ham. Looking at their first match they did have some good possession, but didn’t do nearly enough with it. They managed 12 shots, but only one of those actually on target.

Going in to Sunday’s match Manchester City has some defensive worries with both of their first choice center backs out. Vincent Kompany is out for at least three weeks with a groin strain while Matija Nastasic out with an ankle injury. Nastasic may make it back in time for Sunday, but won’t be fully match fit. Also out injured for Manchester City is Stevan Jovetic and Micah Richards. Cardiff City doesn’t have any major injury concerns.

Cardiff City have shown that they want to play attacking soccer, but they are coming up against a very strong Manchester City team. They will certainly have a hard time trying to break down Manchester City’s midfield and back line.

My prediction is a Manchester City win. They have too much quality and their attacking options this season are looking excellent under Pellegrini. Cardiff City may be able to get themselves a first EPL goal with Kompany out, even if Nastasic is able to get fit in time.

Form: Cardiff City (L)     Manchester City (W)

Prediction: Cardiff City 0 – 3 Manchester City
