Manchester United started out the 2013-14 EPL season by winning the Community Shield, beating Wigan Athletic. The win also providing David Moyes with his first competitive match win and first trophy as the new manager of Manchester United.

Manchester United was dominant throughout the match and Robin van Persie got off to a great start by scoring in the seventh minute. David Moyes put out a strong side which included Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs, but with Wayne Rooney left out completely. Robin van Persie doubled their lead in the 59th minute with a deflected shot from outside the box.
Wilfred Zaha did get a start and showed his pace down the wing. However, he was mostly ineffective in getting the ball into good attacking positions and lost the ball several times. With that said, with some maturing and learning he should become a great winger for United, which is something they were missing last season.
Antonio Valencia did come on in the second half and looked much better than he did all of last season. He got himself forward into good positions and came close to scoring at one point.
Adnan Januzaj become the second United youngster to make his competitive debut when he came on for Robin van Persie in the 84th minute.
David Moyes will be very happy with the win and especially with having kept a clean sheet.
