In the 2013-14 EPL season Manchester United is hoping they can build on last season’s Premier League title win. With David Moyes replacing Sir Alex Ferguson there are plenty of question marks surrounding the season and how well they can do.
Manchester United has done virtually nothing this summer transfer season with Moyes making only one signing. The lone signing of the summer thus far is the 20 year old Uraguayan defender Guillermo Varela. United was linked with a move for Cesc Febragas including several very public bids for the Barcelona midfielder, but Fabregas and Barcelona have made it very clear that he is not going anywhere.
However, the most drama has come with the rumors surrounding Wayne Rooney. This is something that will not be ending any time soon. If Rooney does leave it looks most likely that he will go to London based Chelsea. There is no way that United will let him leave for Chelsea until after they face off against each other on August 26th, but it is looking like this move is imminent.
So, what exactly will Moyes do to strengthen the squad especially with the need for a quality playmaking midfielder? There are very few options and while they continue to be linked with bids for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, these players do not really fill the needs that United has. Perhaps Shinji Kagawa will be able to fill the void this season, but what they often lacked last term was a player to link play between Carrick sitting deep in midfield and Kagawa farther up.
This season United should start playing Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in their more natural positions of central defenders, particularly with Rio Ferdinand getting older and Nemanja Vidic increasingly injury prone. Getting a solid defensive pairing to utilize throughout the season will be crucial, especially with the number of injuries and center back partners United went through last season. In goal David de Gea has continued to improve and this year should show his progression.
This 2013-14 Manchester United team has some depth, but the question is whether they have the quality. They no longer have the sort of team that can be compared to the giants of Europe and they will struggle to compete in the Champions League. As far as progressing in the Champions League, they will be hoping to get an easy group, but I think they will have a difficult time getting even as far as the quarter finals.
My prediction for Manchester United in the 2013-14 EPL season is a top four finish, and most likely second. I think they will have a hard time starting strong this season and hopefully won’t be too far off the pace by Christmas. They do have a chance to challenge for the title, but definitely need to get a world class central midfielder as well as getting better output from their wingers. Manchester United will start out with the 2013 Community Shield on Sunday, August 11 against Wigan. They start the 2013-14 EPL season the following week with a trip to Swansea City on Saturday, August 17.
