Everton come into Sunday’s match needing a win to keep alive their slim chance of finishing in fifth for the Europa League place. As it stands right now they are in sixth place, three points behind Tottenham, having played one more match than Spurs.
Liverpool sit in seventh place with 54 points, just five behind Everton. They will certainly be targeting a finish above Everton this season after finishing in eighth place behind them last season. A win for them would mean that they are able to close that gap.
The last time these two met in the Premier League was back on October 28 where they drew 2-2. This season Liverpool at home has gone 8-5-4 while scoring 32 and allowing 16. Everton is 4-8-5 on the road scoring 21 and allowing 21. Both teams take a lot of shots with Liverpool leading the league at 19.3 shots per game (6.1 on target per game) and a total of 676 and Everton fourth with 16.4 shots per game (5.5 on target per game) with 574 total. In their last meeting Everton took 16 shots with four on target while Liverpool had 13 shots and three on target with Everton having 56% possession. I’m expecting these numbers to be mostly reversed for this Sunday’s derby.
Liverpool will be without Luis Suarez, but their last match showed that this might not be as much of a problem as some thought. With that said, he is a brilliant scoring threat that will be missing and means that Everton don’t need to worry as much about him. They also have had a week to study that last match and set up a game plan to slow down Liverpool. Everton could have Darron Gibson return which would be crucial for them, especially with the way that Nikica Jelavic has been playing for most of this season; and that’s to say he’s playing very poorly.
My prediction for this Liverpool derby is a draw. I think Everton will be able to set themselves up to slow down Liverpool and frustrate them. Liverpool has shown time and time again that they are inconsistent and that they can be frustrated, particularly in midfield, even when they dominate possession and passing. That said, since this is a derby there is always a chance for a shocker. Either team has a great chance of getting a win and both will have plenty of motivation to do so.
