Result: Sunderland 1 – 1 Norwich City

Location: Stadium of Light

Sunderland – 1 Norwich – 1
Craig Gardner PEN 40’ Wes Hoolahan 26’

A few somewhat controversial plays helped out Sunderland in the first half. Norwich goalkeeper Mark Bunn came out of the box to clear a ball in the 30th minute, but in doing so had his hands up and clearly handled it. As the last man back he was given a straight red. Despite his protestations and anger it was the right call.

This had been preceded by a Wes Hoolahan goal in the 26th minute. Kei Kamara had a free header on the Norwich corner and his ball was going into the net, but was further helped on by Hoolahan’s own free header as he was unmarked just about on the goal line.

Sunderland got a goal back in the 40th minute after it was judged that Sebastien Bassong handled the ball in the box. My original thought was that it was a wrong call, especially after seeing that the linesman didn’t even flag until several seconds after the incident and upon seeing Sunderland players calling for it. After a few other replays it did seem that the ball went off of Bassong’s chest, then off his arm and ended up being a good call. Craig Gardner put away the penalty kick quick easily to level the teams going into the half. First half stats showed that Sunderland had 60% of the ball resulting in 9 shots (3 on target) compared to Norwich’s 4 shots and 1 on target for a goal.

The second half Sunderland really should have done more, but were rather poor. Norwich should have had a penalty after a Danny Rose handball in the box. He was clearly in the box when he handled the ball, but the referee gave a free kick on the edge instead. I have no idea why.

Sunderland continued to dominate the stats with 15 shots and 6 on target while Norwich had 8 shots and only the 1 on target. The draw for Sunderland does not clear up their position any more than before. They remain in 15th place just one point above Aston Villa and only 7 points above the drop zone, far from safe. Norwich edge their way closer to safety by moving up to 34 points in 11th place.
