Result: Tottenham 2 – 1 Arsenal

Location: White Hart Lane – Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham – 2 Arsenal – 1
Gareth Bale 37’  Per Mertesacker 51′
Aaron Lennon 39’

Arsenal were the better side for most of the first half, except for about 3 minutes during which Spurs got their goals. Both goals came from similar plays with the goal scorers making diagonal runs to get behind the Arsenal off side trap. Both were also results of poor defending that first sent Bale one on one with the keeper then the same for Aaron Lennon.

Interestingly enough most of the half time talk was of how awful Arsenal were. Meanwhile, in reality, Arsenal looked like the better team for almost all of the first half. They were attacking well and kept Tottenham on the back foot with their high pressure attack.

The second half started out much the same as the first and Arsenal got a goal back in the 51st minute with a header by Per Mertesacker from a free kick. From this point on the game really opened up and was end to end with both teams attacking and really going all out for it. It was a very scrappy, high intensity North London Derby that ended with 6 minutes of extra time that Tottenham were able to see out for the win.

While there were certainly times that Arsenal looked the better side, they had difficulty finishing chances and their defense let them down for the two goals. Two moments of mentally switching off led to the loss. Overall, Tottenham played a better all around game. Their one big mistake resulted in Arsenal’s goal.

The win for Tottenham moves them back into third place only 2 points behind Manchester City (prior to their match on Monday). It also means that they are 7 points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal, meanwhile, remain in 5th place 5 points behind Chelsea and 2 points ahead of Everton. This result really opens up the running for all of the European places.
