Result: Manchester City 1 – 0 Reading
Location: Etihad Stadium – Manchester City
|Man City – 1||Reading – 0|
|Gareth Barry (90’+3’)|
I would say that Reading deserved a point in this match the way that they played. There were times when Manchester City looked good, but so often their attack broke down and looked poor. Reading had very few chances (5 shots, 1 on target), but defended well throughout.
Gareth Barry’s stoppage time winner was the difference in the match despite complaints from Reading player’s that he fouled the defender by jumping off his back to head in. They have a valid point, and it’s disappointing that it wasn’t a goal free of some small controversy, but then again, it wouldn’t fit in with Manchester City’s tabloid-esque season. They have done a great job of getting last gasp winners this year, but if they want to retain their title, they really need to do better than this. This was a match that City should have won comfortably being at home to the team at the bottom of the table. I would say that they often looked boring and lacking creativity through large stretches of the match, too often playing the ball back or simply retaining possession by passing around in the midfield or even in their own half. Credit to Reading for holding them off for all of the 90 minutes, and unlucky to concede at the end.
Reading’s loss keeps them bottom of the table while City move within 3 points of leaders Manchester United.
