Location: Anfield – Liverpool
|Liverpool – 1||Aston Villa – 3|
|Steven Gerrard (87’)||Christian Benteke (29’)|
|Andreas Weimann (40’)|
|Christian Benteke (51’)|
A pretty shocking result for both sides, in this Premier League match. Liverpool completely dominated possession with 72% of the ball while also getting off 29 shots! Of these 29 shots, they managed only 8 on goal (44%). Really, Liverpool dominated in every category except the most important one: goals. Christian Benteke was certainly the man of the match bagging a brace and getting an assist on their second goal.
Christian Benteke’s first goal in the 29th minute was a fantastic strike at the top of the box. He shot low and hard and put it into the lower left corner just inside, and off, the post. Villa’s second goal came from Andreas Weimann just before the half on the 40th minute. Benteke dribbled into the box and sent a great back-heel through ball for Weimann to put away making it 2-0.
Benteke rounded out his brace in the 51st minute with another amazing solo effort as he dribbled into Liverpool’s penalty box and past two defenders before shooting high and hard into the top corner. Liverpool did manage to get a consolation goal in the 87th minute, though I doubt it will bring much consolation to Rodgers or the rest of Liverpool who should have done much better. Their loss today will surely be a tough one to take and could shake their confidence going into the Christmas season. For Aston Villa, it’s a great away win that they can build upon.
