Result: West Ham United 2 – 3 Liverpool
Location: Upton Park – West Ham United
|West Ham – 2||Liverpool – 3
|Mark Noble (PEN 36’)||Glen Johnson (11’)|
|Steven Gerrard (OG 43’)||Joe Cole (76’)|
|Jonjo Shelvey (79’)|
Liverpool had to rely on the individual brilliance of Glen Johnson and Joe Cole for two of their goals. Their third goal was claimed by Jonjo Shelvey, but eventually given as an own goal against James Collins as Shelvey’s sliding flick towards goal went off of his boot and over Jaaskalainen in the goal. All three goals were fantastically worked and well deserved, and all without Luis Suarez on the pitch. West Ham played well, but did struggle in the final third. Their two goals coming from a penalty and a Steven Gerrard own goal.
In many ways Liverpool were outplayed and West Ham probably deserved at least a draw from this one. However, West Ham just were not able to do what Liverpool, finish off their chance needed for the result.
Liverpool equalizer through Joe Cole:
Collins own goal for Liverpool winner:
