This was a very enjoyable match to watch throughout. It ended a West Brom win as I predicted, even if it was a 4 – 2 final instead of 2 – 1. Lot’s of end to end play with both teams playing for the win. Zoltan Gera opened the scoring in the 30th minute with an excellent curling shot. Shane Long then put West Brom up 2 – 0 just before the half in the 44th minute.
The last 20 minutes saw Sunderland storm back and really push hard to get something out of the match. Craig Gardner’s 73rd minute goal gave them some hope until Romelu Lukaku put away the Baggies 81st minute penalty. In the 87th minute Stephane Sessegnon again made it interesting, and indeed the last minutes were very interesting, with the final goal coming for West Brom in the 5th minute of stoppage time.
Sunderland played hard, but again, just weren’t able to do enough to get a result. West Brom was definitely the better team for the day and continue to play well. West Brom’s 26 points moves them up to 3rd place, at least until they wait to see what Chelsea does tomorrow.
