Premier League Scores: Result and Highlights from the EPL Fixture between Manchester United v Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Result: Manchester United 3 – 1 Queens Park Rangers

Location: Old Trafford – Manchester United

Man United – 3 QPR – 1
Jonny Evans (64’) Jaime Mackie (52’)
Darren Fletcher (68’)
Javier Hernandez (71’)

Before the start of the match Queens Park Rangers announced the official appointment of Harry Redknapp as Mark Hughes’ replacement. It seemed that the dismissal of Hughes is exactly what QPR needed. QPR played with the grittiness and heart that has been missing this season (and particularly last week against Southampton). It also seemed to help to make 5 changes from last week’s team. The addition of Jamie Mackie seemed especially a good one.

I predicted a 3 – 0 win for Manchester United earlier in the week and fully expected the score-line to be at least this much. I did not expect QPR to come out and give Manchester a game in the way that they did. Full credit to Rangers for frustrating United for as long as they did.

In the first half Manchester United had the better chances overall, with Rooney forcing 2 saves from Julio Cesar. However, the visitors were able to put the ball in the back of the net through Jamie Mackie only to have the flag raised for offside. He was just offsides, but it also showed the weakness of United’s back line.

Queens Park Rangers’ set up was very disciplined and solid and kept United’s strong offense from breaking through and creating any clear chances. Second half started off just where the first half ended. Jamie Mackie put Rangers in front in the 53rd minute following a corner that again exposed United’s weakness in defending.

Jonny Evans finally stepped up on offense showing some spirit to head home United’s first goal of the match in the 64th minute following a bouncing, downward header from Danny Welbeck off of their sixth corner of the match. This was followed up with their seventh corner of the match resulting in a 68th minute headed goal by Darren Fletcher (on his first Premier League match since last November). Both goals assisted by Wayne Rooney taking each corner.

Javier Hernandez grabbed yet another goal for himself in the 71st minute to make it 3 goals for United in 8 minutes. Anderson played Chicharito through into the box where he took one touch before firing past Cesar to give the Red Devils a 3 – 1 lead.

It’s an odd statement to make, considering the starts of the two teams, but QPR had the energy and determination needed to get a result while United looked flat and unimaginative. This finally changed in the 59th minute with the substitutions of Javier Hernandez on for Paul Scholes and Anderson on for Ashley Young. Young and Welbeck were ineffective on the wings. Javier Hernandez’s movement coming on as a substitute was a difference maker in allowing Manchester United to open up the Rangers defense.

In the end, the three points were deserved for a United team that may have started out frustrating and boring, but once again worked their way into a win. QPR maybe didn’t deserve to lose, but they did not do enough to get the win despite finally playing with some grit and determination. They did not roll over and give up like they did last week, or like I thought they would. With Harry Redknapp coming in, there is still hope that this team can make a  second half run and keep themselves out of relegation.
