This was a match in which two goals were the results of some controversial refereeing decisions. Manchester City’s first goal came through the decision to give City a corner kick leading David Silva scoring in the 43rd minute. City’s second goal came on a very dubious penalty that seemed to be given by the linesman rather than the referee. The call was given as a handball, but there was no contact made by the defender. Sergio Aguero stepped up to put the penalty away with ease in the 54th minute.
The second penalty given against Aston Villa was not nearly as controversial as Barry Bannan certainly handled the ball in the box leading to Carlos Tevez penalty goal in the 65th minute. Sergio Aguero heaped more misery on Aston Villa in the 68th minute. This was followed by his substitution for Edin Dzeko. Carlos Tevez got himself on a hat trick in the 74th minute with his second goal.
Aston Villa did have a couple of chances, but Joe Hart turned them into some excellent saves. I predicted a Manchester City win, an easy enough pick, but I would have to say that they had help from the referee for this one. Man City may have dominated the match, but they didn’t really take ahold of the match and make it theirs until after they had their lead. Aston Villa seemed to give up after the first penalty and Manchester City took over from there.
The Manchester City win puts them at the top of the table on 28 points, 1 point above Manchester United with United set to play this afternoon.
