I predicted a runaway 3 – 0 win for Manchester United, however Aston Villa had other plans for this one. I would add that United’s midfield and defense added to this. In the end United’s season long plan to simply score more than their opponent held true.
Aston Villa looked very dangerous on the break, especially with United’s back line being exposed over and over. Lack of tracking back by United’s midfield led to both goals either side of half time by Andread Weimann. Both goals were taken well and deserved based on their work getting in behind the United defense.
Javier Hernandez got one back for United with a Paul Scholes pass hitting Hernandez as he made his run into Villa’s box. Chicharito stayed with the ball and put it past Brad Guzan as he came out of the goal to close him down.
Aston Villa’s defense was set up to frustrate United’s midfield, particularly the wingers with both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia struggling to be relevant. Ashley Young seemed to be especially harassed and attempting to prove a point to his former employers. Valencia finally worked his way inside where he worked the ball to Wayne Rooney who then got the ball out to Hernandez who fired towards goal. The ball took a deflection off of Ron Vlaar and into the back of the net to level.
Wayne Rooney had a great strike from distance but Guzan got down quickly to make the save. Soon after this Weimann nearly got his hat trick when he put a powerful header on goal, but David de Gea was there to punch away.
Christian Benteke’s speed was a factor throughout the whole match and continued to get behind the United defense. However, he was often let down with his final ball. Manchester United began to increase their tempo and push the Villans defense more and more.
Robin van Persie began to make himself know first with a header off a Rooney corner that went off the bottom of the crossbar, which was then followed up by a dipping, curling shot from outside of the box that also went off the crossbar.
From here the game really slowed down with United dominating possession but the Villa defense holding strong until the 87th minute with a United free kick. Robin van Persie put a wonderful free kick into the box where Hernandez met it with what was essentially free header past Guzan, who was furious with his defense.
In the closing minutes David de Gea came under quite a bit more pressure. Despite previous criticism of his ability in the box for crosses he made 2 excellent punches to clear balls out of his box. United’s defense was able to hold on to claim all three points after going down 2 goals to keep them top of the league. This makes it 15 points that they have been able to claim from a losing position.
