Champions League Predictions: Group Stage Round 6 Match Picks

The last round of the group stage matches in the 2014-15 Champions League season take place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, so read on for my round 6 predictions. Groups A, B, C, and D play on Tuesday while E, F, G, and H play on Wednesday in the last round of group stage matches before proceeding to the knockout stages.

There are already several teams who have progressed to the next stages while still others are either already knocked out or advancing to Europa League play.

Those teams advancing include: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona, Chelsea, FC Porto, and, Shakhtar Donetsk.

Group A: Juventus should progress and need only a draw to guarantee this with their nine points compared to third place Olympiakos with six. Olympiakos would need to win and be able to reverse their -5 goal difference to overcome Juventus’ +3. However, they will have the Europa League to look forward to.

Group B: Real Madrid have yet to lose and I don’t see them doing anything other than beating Ludogorets at home, although, the away team will be pushing hard to stake their claim on a second place finish and could make it a close one. Liverpool need to win to be able to advance. A draw will do them no good since they are two points behind Basel who have six points thus far. Basel are not an easy team to beat and Liverpool will struggle.

Group C: Bayer Leverkusen are guaranteed a place in the knockout round, but need to at least draw to ensure they finish top of the group. Zenit St. Petersburg are in third and travel to second place Monaco with just a point to split the two teams. Both matches will be close and the fact that only two points separate first and third in the group mean that it should be an interesting day for all four teams involved.

Group D: With Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund already through they will be playing for who takes first. Dortmund need only to draw while Arsenal need to win and hope Dortmund lose. Galatasaray has nothing to play for since they are eliminated and Anderlecht has little to play for since they are already through to the Europa League.

Group E: One of the most even groups of the stage, if you don’t count Bayern Munich. FC Bayern have already won the group while the rest area all stuck on five points meaning that it is possible for any of the remaining three to advance with a win. If CSKA Moscow and Manchester City both win, it will be CSKA advancing based on their head to head. If Roma win they will advance with CSKA and City going out. It’s a tricky group and will be very exciting to see which team gets to move on.

Group F: Barcelona and PSG play each other to see who will win the group. Paris Saint Germain hold a one point lead with 13 points and need only a draw to ensure they are winners. Meanwhile, Ajax and APOEL play to see who will enter the Europa League.

Group G: Chelsea have already clinched as group winners, but playing at home means that they will be looking to win. Schalke can advance if they win and Sporting lose to Chelsea, but Maribor will be hoping to make it difficult, especially since a win for them would see them take the Europa League place.

Group H: FC Porto is yet another group winner with 13 points while they play second place Shakhtar Donetsk who have already advanced as well. Athletic Bilbao need at least a draw against BATE Borisov to stake their spot in the Europa League.

The last round of group stage matches is always interesting and this year’s will be very exciting. With teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Roma all playing for a chance to advance it will be lots of fun!
