Premier League Scores: Result and Highlights from the EPL Fixture between Chelsea v Liverpool on Sunday, November 11, 2012.
Result: Chelsea 1 – 1 Liverpool
Location: Stamford Bridge – Chelsea
|Chelsea – 1||Liverpool – 1|
John Terry (20’)
|Luis Suarez (73’)|
My prediction for the week was a Chelsea win (3 – 2), but the 1 – 1 draw was what came instead.
The first half started out as expected, with Liverpool dominant in possession but doing very little with it, having only a handful of shots. Chelsea, on the other hand, were able to do plenty with their possession getting several chances. John Terry got their first goal in the 20th minute with a powerful near post header off a corner.
Chelsea will be very concerned with John Terry when he went down very awkwardly following a tackle on Luis Suarez. The tackle saw Suarez falling on Terry’s knee (purely accidental) and the Chelsea captain immediately raise his hand for help. He took several minutes of medical attention before being stretchered off and Gary Cahill coming on in the 40th minute.
Half time came with Chelsea up 1 – 0. Liverpool had 64% of the possession but managed only 3 shots, all off target, and 3 corners. This compared to Chelsea’s 36% possession with 7 shots (2 on goal) and 1 corner (resulting in their goal). One positive for Liverpool to take away was the 3 offsides calls. Yes, they were offside, but it did show that they were pushing the Chelsea back line and if they can continue there could be a breakthrough.
The second half picked up more or less where the first half left off. Chelsea was getting more of the ball and continued to do well with it. Fernando Torres came very close to finally getting a goal against his former employers but Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones did well to save it.
Liverpool continued to attack, but also continued to struggle with converting chances until the 73rd minute. Liverpool got their 6th corner of the match and it was there turn to get a goal on a corner as Luis Suarez got free and headed home for his 8th goal in 9 matches.
With the score level Liverpool kept going with their pass and control style. Their most deadly chances ultimately came from long balls played forward to Luis Suarez. In the 81st minute Torres chances of getting a goal came to an end as he was substituted for Victor Moses.
The draw will benefit Liverpool more so than Chelsea since it drops Chelsea to 3rd behind the two Manchester clubs. Liverpool stays put in 13th place, still in the lower half of the league. A win would’ve moved them up into the top 10 above Newcastle.
