The 2017-18 Premier League season is finally here with the first match kicking off on Friday evening. With a Friday night kickoff, don’t forget to set your fantasy Premier League team early, regardless of whichever format you are playing. With the start of the season also comes the start of Premier League predictions.
If you haven’t already done so you can read my 2017-18 Premier League Preseason Predictions as well as my opening FPL article, Heart of Head, discussing the pitfalls of selecting your fantasy team using your emotional attachments.
This early in the season there are often inconsistencies in results that come through. Generally speaking the top clubs come away with wins, but this is also the best time for the lower ranked teams to get a result. This usually comes from the start of the season just getting under way and teams not being fully up to speed.
Despite this, I am predicting that most of the top teams will come away with wins and the majority of “upsets” will come in the middle of the of the table.
Week 1 Predictions:
|Friday, August 11|
|Saturday, August 12|
|Sunday, August 13|
|11:00/16:00||Manchester United||1||v||1||West Ham|
Week 1 FPL Tips:
For the first week of the season I’m advocating starting out with a very strong attacking line. For myself I’m going with Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane, and Glenn Murray up front in the hopes that they will start out the year scoring goals. I believe it is better to start out the season strong and build the season from there. Last year I went with too many differentials and that killed my season and left me playing catchup.
For my defense I decided to spread things out with a mix of 4.5 and 5.5 alongside the 7.0 Marcos Alonso. Before the season actually starts I might switch this up and go with a few lower priced defenders.
I am going to be looking at a few swaps between Southampton and Brighton or Newcastle. The goal here will be to get value out of fairly positive fixtures for the clubs, particularly Southampton, and the ability to switch between teams based on home/away matches.
To be honest I haven’t completely nailed down my team and I’m still looking at possibly putting Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez in midfield and maybe dropping Harry Kane. He will still need to prove that he can score goals away from White Hart Lane, so it might be better to wait and see if he can do it. The problem here is going to be what happens if he does start out strong.
That wraps the first week of predictions and FPL tips. I’m definitely looking forward to a big opening weekend which should be exciting. It’s nice get a fresh start to a new season with high hopes. Good luck and have fun!
